Some signs of a diseased tree

Trees add beauty to most any lawn, but if you’re start to notice your tree starts to look strange on its leaves or bark, it may be a sign of a tree disease. If a disease gets into the root system it can affect surrounding trees to catch the infection. If you are unsure if your tree has a disease, here is a list of common tree diseases




#1. Powdery mildew.
If the leaves on your tree start to look dusty or powdery white, it could mean that you have a powdery mildew infestation. This common disease greatly affects the look of plants and trees. Even though it doesn’t cause much damage to the tree, it looks much worse. So it’s important to use fungicides that are harmless and natural to protect your plants.


#2. Leaf rust.
Leaf rust is a distinctive orange or reddish spotting on the leaves. This fungal disease can affect other plants as well as trees so it’s very important to take care of it ASAP.


#3. Leaf spot.
Leaf spot is quite similar to leaf rust, the leaf spots cause discoloration on the leaves of the tree. You can use fungicides if its not too far gone, but if its too bad you should have the tree removed entirely


#4. Fire blight.
This “burning” look could be an indication of blight that might be a harmful disease of several fruit trees and related plants. It can be treated so that the tree does not have to be cut down.


#5. Gall.
Galls are an abnormal growth that appear on leaves or branches. It is important to prune the infected areas, and dispose of the debris properly to insure you prevent any further spreading.


#6. Canker.
This growth appears along a tree’s trunk that has become infected by fungal or bacterial pathogens. It is an abnormal growth that can weaken a tree and cause it to fall overtime. This oval canker can be discolored or brown and reddish. Cankers are difficult to control because there is no way to really reverse the symptoms. If you find one on any branches, you can cut  the affected parts several inches behind the infection but you shouldn’t attempt tor remove it when the bark is wet as this could spread the fungus. #7. Witch’s broom.
This is a cluster if branches that look much like a witch’s broom. While this doesn’t pose much of a threat to itself other plants, it does detract from the look off the tree


#8. Japanese beetle.
This invasive species can feast on the leaves of trees in your yard. While we don’t have a lot around here, once they are noticeable, they should be removed quickly.
